A little guidance. A whole new way to think.

Understanding at Lightspeed

English. Mathematics. Computer Science.
One-on-one learning that turns “I don’t get it” into “That was easy!”

Find your starting point Explore the subjects

Start with a free 20-minute conversation.

For school. For university. For what’s next.

Real experience.Ideas connected to the world outside the classroom.

Your pace.A personal plan, with space to ask every question.

Lasting understanding.Skills you can explain, apply, and build on.

Start where you are.

Your goals.
Your way forward.

A little support with today’s work. A deeper grasp of your subject. The confidence to try something new.

01 / School

Build understanding.
Let confidence follow.

We connect the lesson to what you already know, practise the tricky parts, and make room for questions. The pace follows the learner.

Find your starting point

What we can work on

  • EnglishRead carefully and turn an idea into a clear paragraph.
  • MathematicsUnderstand the steps, then tackle a problem independently.
  • Computer ScienceConnect a simple algorithm to a program you can explain.

Bring your classwork, a practice question, or the part that feels confusing.

02 / University

Go deeper.
Make the reasoning yours.

Work through demanding material with someone who understands academic expectations. We focus on the ideas behind the assignment and the skills you’ll need for the next one.

Talk through your course

What we can work on

  • EnglishShape a research question, assess sources, and strengthen an argument.
  • MathematicsConnect calculus, statistics, and proofs to the underlying concepts.
  • Computer ScienceReason about data structures, trace code, and debug with a method.

Your work stays your own. Bring the course outline so we can check the fit.

03 / New skills & careers

A new direction.
A practical place to begin.

Build on the experience you already have. My background in software engineering helps connect new concepts to practical work, with focused practice and honest feedback.

What we can work on

  • CommunicateWrite clearly and explain a technical idea with confidence.
  • ReasonRefresh mathematical foundations and develop comfort with data.
  • BuildLearn programming, develop a small project, and practise talking through code.

Start with a goal, a project idea, or a skill you’d like to use at work.

The first step is a conversation.

A plan that starts with you.

Bring the question, the assignment, or the ambition. We’ll figure out the next step together.

  1. 01

    Let’s talk.

A free 20-minute intro to understand your goals, your starting point, and how you learn.

  2. 02

    Find the missing piece.

We work through something together and build a personal plan around what you actually need.

  3. 03

    Make progress yours.

Regular sessions, focused practice, and clear feedback. You’ll know what’s clicking and what comes next.

Your tutor. Your thinking partner.

Real-world perspective.
Personal attention.

The best part of teaching is the moment an idea becomes yours.

Mohammed ArafatSoftware engineer & educator

More than a decade building software has taught me that strong work starts with clear thinking. The same is true of a well-written argument, a mathematical proof, and your first working program.

I bring that perspective to every session, alongside experience helping learners navigate academic work and move into new careers. We slow down, ask questions, and connect the idea to something you can use.

You get a consistent thinking partner, an honest explanation, and room to get it wrong on the way to getting it.

Let’s find your next step

A human approach to learning.

Good questions.
Deeper understanding.

We start with a pencil, a conversation, and your own attempt. The reasoning stays visible, so we can see exactly where an idea needs more attention.

When it helps, AI becomes a practice partner: asking questions, offering feedback, and helping you check your thinking. You learn to use it with judgment.

In vivo / live understanding

Your work.
Your responsibility.

See the approach

Every assignment we work on includes an in vivo check: students answer questions live, in person or on a call, without seeing the questions in advance.

The student owns the thinking. They are responsible for explaining their answers and the reasoning behind them. This helps prevent cheating and shows whether they understand the assignment.

I’ve used this approach with college students to great effect. The goal is understanding they can demonstrate for themselves.

Formats & pricing

Choose how we
work together.

Every session is 55 minutes of teaching plus a short written summary for you. Choose a format that fits your routine. We’ll agree on the rate and the plan before your first session.

Rate shared on your free intro call

  • Two to four students at a similar level
  • Great for exam prep or a shared course
  • We'll confirm it's a good match first
Discuss a small group
  • Free intro call. Twenty minutes, no charge and no obligation.
  • Packages. Prepay five or ten sessions and get a small discount — optional, never required.
  • Rescheduling. Free up to 12 hours before a session.
  • Sliding scale. If cost is the obstacle, say so. We keep a few reduced-rate slots each term.

A few good questions.

Before
we begin.

Here’s what to expect, from the first conversation to the next session.

Have another question?
Who is tutoring for?

School students, university students, and adults building new skills. We work with beginners, learners preparing for exams, and people moving toward a new career. The first conversation helps us check that your goals fit the support we can offer.

What does a session look like?

One-on-one, with space to think aloud and ask questions. We start with what you’re working on, identify a gap, practise together, and finish with something you can explain independently. Sessions last 55 minutes, with a short written summary afterward.

Can we meet online or in person?

Whichever works best for you! Online sessions use a private Zoom link and shared whiteboard, with a pencil and paper beside you. In-person sessions take place at libraries or an agreed study space across the DC metro area. Home visits can be discussed as needed.

Can you help me change careers?

Yes. We can work on programming foundations, practical projects, technical interview fundamentals, and communicating your work clearly. We build around your experience and goals, with honest feedback on what to practise next.

How do you use AI in lessons?

Your own attempt comes first. We use AI when it supports practice, critique, or explanation, and check its output together. School and assessment rules guide what is appropriate. Read more about the approach.

How much does tutoring cost?

Rates depend on the format and are shared on your free intro call. You’ll know the rate and the plan before booking a session. There’s no package required to start.
